Jewish Spirituality for Gay Men: A Dinner Conversation w. Jay MichaelsonFriday, February 12, 2010, 6:00 pm Etc/GMT-7 We are honored to have Jay Michaelson as our guest for this Shabbat. Jay is author of the just-released book from Shambhala/Trumpeter, Everything is God: The Radical Path of Nondual Judaism. A frequent contributor for The Huffington Post and The Forward, and a co-founder of the journal Zeek, Jay will be delivering the d’rash (sermon) during Shabbat services on Friday evening, which begin at 7:30 pm. Preceding services, at 6:00 pm Jay will join us for a conversation over dinner on: Jewish Spirituality for Gay Men Is there a “gay spirituality,” and if so, what is it? What roles can feminist gay and bisexual men claim in 21st century Jewish life, at once recognizing male privilege but affirming maleness? How can old archetypes in the Bible, Jewish mystical life, and Jewish folklore — from initiation rites to the kiddush club — be reclaimed and queered today? And what is it about Jewish masculinity that is able to run the gamut from ineffectual nebbish to horny Philip Roth sex fiend to hyper-macho Israeli soldier? In this dinner conversation, sponsored by the Congregation Sha'ar Zahav Mensch Group, we’ll explore some of these issues together. Dinner Conversation: $10 members. $15 general public. Shabbat Service: Free To join us for this dinner, email shaun@shaarzahav.org or call 415-861-6932 x304. and to find out more details on this evening with Jay Michaelson, please email Kevin Johnson, kcjcsz@att.net.
